Overview

The individual will lead strategic sourcing activities for assigned categories delivering improved network efficiencies, productivity savings, improving cash flow and meeting quality/service expectations across all business areas.  The Category Manager will work collaboratively with all Synergy North America manufacturing sites for assigned categories.  Works closely with internal stakeholders to manage overall business relationships and strategies with key suppliers.  Leads Procurement category projects and represents Procurement on cross-functional teams, related projects and other key initiatives.  Responsible for ensuring compliance with Synergy Flavors Policies & Controls.  This individual will have relevant experience in the consumer packaged goods, food or food ingredient manufacturing industries. Primary commodity categories under management will include coffee, tea, agricultural ingredients, food chemicals, packaging.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Category Manager:

  • Provides strategic sourcing, planning and project management.  Develop and lead strategic sourcing activities for assigned categories to include; project management, strategy development, RFI/RFP development and analysis, negotiations, supplier selection, contracting, implementation, ongoing category management and contractual compliance.  Effectively manage strategic supplier relationships including; business expectations, Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), score carding, business reviews, benchmarking and implementing continuous improvement recommendations from internal/external stakeholders.  Address and resolve issues related to product/service delivery, quality, customer service, purchase orders/service orders and invoice resolution.
  • Drives financial planning & cost management.  Owns financial and cost metrics for assigned categories to develop and implement short and long-term plans that improve service, optimize costs, lower inventories, improve cash flow and mitigate risk.  Develops productivity plans and risk mitigation strategies for assigned categories to ensure supply security and lowest total cost of ownership.  Responsible for productivity and cash flow (payment terms) savings targets in support of Finance and Procurement goals.
  • Stakeholder alignment.  Establishes and maintains strategic alliances with key internal and external stakeholder focused on innovation, total cost of ownership and service solutions.  Provide category expertise for relevant industries including economic/market conditions, understanding of supply chain structure & manufacturing, development of contingency plans to address industry and business changes.  Leverage local, regional and global sourcing strategies to form partnerships with strategically critical suppliers and stakeholders.
  • Supports growth initiatives and building brand value.  Prioritizes work in support of key growth initiatives and integrates acquisitions & divestitures.  Leads dialogue regarding supplier capabilities, capacity planning and risk management. 
  • Organizational leadership.  Leads and participates in cross-functional teams to gain alignment and support of peers and stakeholders to achieve business results.  Is viewed as a category expert by stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates corporate responsibility.  Ensures adherence to Procurement Policies & Procedures.  Complies with internal controls, Procurement and Business Code of Conduct policies.  Supports internal audit reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required, APICS and CPM certification preferred
  • Expert knowledge in Procurement Processes: Strategic Sourcing, Supplier Optimization, Negotiating, Contracting and Commodity Management in the food and beverage industry- minimum of 6+ year
  • General/Basic Background in Supply Chain
  • Business & Financial Acumen, and a demonstrated ability in communicating to senior stakeholders
  • Ability to travel as required, including visiting vendors/growers and other Synergy locations.  Estimated 10% Travel
