Overview

The Senior Flavor Chemist is a technical leadership position responsible for the flavor creation process from conceptualization through commercial application within the food and beverage segment.  Focal areas include guiding new product development, quality improvement, cost reduction and training/mentoring.  The Senior Flavor Chemist is expected to demonstrate a creative and innovative mindset, technical excellence and effective mentoring of flavorists.  This position routinely engages Synergy’s Commercial, Marketing, Applications, Sensory, Research and Operations functions to ensure the delivery of customer-preferred products. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Creates innovative flavors for a range of food and beverage products to meet the specific requirements of our customers
  • Supports the Sales team and Sales activities by providing technical support on site, at shows, product demonstrations, events, customer visits, technical presentations, expos or as needed
  • Formulation of liquid compounded flavors, spray dried flavors, flavor emulsions, and flavor extracts
  • Matches samples of flavors from competitors, food products and nature with the support of our analytical team
  • Ability to formulate flavors for alcoholic beverage that meet TTB guidelines and restrictions
  • Serve as project leader for creative projects, as project support for application projects
  • Interface with multiple cross-functional groups to execute projects
  • Applies knowledge and skill sets in the areas of flavor development, sensory evaluation, marketing support, research studies and technical support to cross functional teams as needed
  • Provide leadership, mentorship and instruction to technicians and entry level professional personnel
  • Manage and execute training and guidance to associate flavorists, flavorist in training and technicians
  • Works on flavor development projects with short and long-term scopes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Food Science, Applied or Engineering required; Master a plus
  • Certified Flavorist through the Society of Flavor Chemist
  • Minimum of fifteen years progressive experience in the development of flavors for foods and beverages
  • In depth knowledge of aroma chemicals, essential oils and other materials used in the creation of flavors
  • Proven successful mentoring of flavorists from trainee level to flavorist.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of US and export flavor regulations, flavor manufacturing procedures and quality control of flavors
  • Proven ability to develop targeted application considering all aspects involved and required (cost, restrictions, functionality, etc.)
  • Extraordinary sense of taste and smell, ability to recognize chemicals by odor
  • Interpersonal skills that allow for effective working relationships with peers, cross functional team managers and customers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proficient organizational and computer skills (Microsoft Office)
